Reflections on ferrets and DH part 2. Warning: SPOILERS

I watched DH part 2 yesterday. I was leery of watching beloved characters die, but I was intrigued by friend’s references to Al’s familiar. It piqued my curiosity and I had to ferret out the truth. So armed with my trusty binoculars, I went to see the film. Loved it.

 Since pictures are worth 1,000 words, here’s a summary:

 

Aberforth rulz!! He said everything about Dumbledore I would’ve said. Soon as I find his email address, I’m sending him electronic gift goats :))

 

Minerva was great; I loved her quips and her take charge attitude.

Didn’t like her take on Slytherins though. Really, did she have to send them to the Dungeons?  And if McGonagall is so sage, why didn’t she protest Dumbledore’s treatment of Harry?

I’ll find out her email addy and send her angry electronic ferrets :)

Loved the teachers casting the wards - didn’t like them ganging up on Sev.

The Death Eaters disintegrating on contacting the Hogwarts wards was cool, but maybe it should’ve been explained a bit to the audience.

The sequence with the Battle of Hogwarts took my breath away. I’ve read the book and several variations of the battle, but it kept me at the edge of my seat. It was exciting, visually rich, full of angst and bravery.

When Voldemort confronts Harry for the final time I kept wondering when Nagini was going to bite the dust. I nearly bit my nails, until the Sword and its wielder came to play.

Neville rulz! Neville and Luna are love! Though come on, we all know that Neville and Ginny get together after she and Harry break up, paving the way for H/D

For me, the heart of the movie was Severus.

I’ve read the 7 books and watched the 8 movies and the part that broke my heart was Severus’ sequence. He and Lily growing up, his anguished expression when Lily died, his caring for Harry. Hated Dumbledore manipulating him.

Alan Rickman was great. And Harry’s anguish when Nagini attacks him, it’s heartbreaking too. The camera pans to Ron and Hermione who are suffering, and the moment made the Golden Trio more compassionate, more caring that they’d ever been in my eyes.

But Severus broke my heart. He’s Jean Valjean, tragic and lonely, wrapped in hidden grandeur.

If my tears were memories they would hold Snape’s words, and deeds, and valour. A man for all seasons, indeed. The bravest person Harry ever knew.

Loved how the film treated the Malfoys. Lucius seems lost, a bit like King Lear meandering around. Superb acting by Jason Isaacs.

Narcissa rulz! She’s the thread holding the Malfoys together. Loved how she cajoled Draco to approach the Dark Lord for his awkward hug, which really must have driven Harry crazy.

The Malfoys walk away at the end, Narcissa on the lead, Draco behind. Lucius joins them.

But the deaths offstage of Remus, Tonks and Fred? Dobby had more screen time; couldn’t they have spent more time with them?

 Fred especially, laughing on the face of death. It would’ve been better if they hadn’t died, anyway. More screen time for them, please!

Ginny had  few moments onscreen, and her chemistry with Harry? FAIL

That brief kiss seemed very forced.

Harry and Draco scenes together? WIN

Harry confronts Draco in the Room of Hidden Things and tells him he knows Draco recognized him and didn’t say anything to Bellatrix. Draco is stumped.

He should’ve shouted: “By Merlin, I did it because I love you, Potter!”

 Whereupon angry!Goyle throws the Fiendfyre and so on. I guess it’s one of the deleted scenes :))

The epilogue? James had a small mammal as his familiar, and Albus has what can I only describe as a FERRET!!!

It wasn’t an otter, because they are aquatic or semi-aquatic. It wasn’t a polecat because they are more compact.

FERRETS RULE!

 

Of course it adds to the not so subtle H/D dynamics. Albus obviously knows something. And I suspect he’ll be sorted into Slytherin.

In the end, the story goes on. I’m still intrigued by Valjean and d’Artagnan’s fate, their story more than a hundred years old.

Harry, Draco, Severus and the rest - they’ll live forever in our memories.
