I don't remember this story that well, only that the shirtless guy is fighting some post-apocalyptic aliens or government.
This story I remember very well: it's The rose and the scalpel by Gregory Benford. The rose is Joanne of Arc and the Scalpel is Voltaire. The way they meet and discuss things is very interesting. Benford used this in the novel he wrote for the Foundation series.
The next one is the cover for Charles Sheffield's Proteus Unbound. That was a series that was published in Analog, quite nifty story featuring an interesting use of entropy in the Outer Solar System.
At any rate, this is what I had before fanfiction :)
