Diving

I was swallowed by the cold sea whose caress would have felt brutal against mortal flesh.  I tucked my knees under my chest and pivoted to change my center of gravity so I faced the bottom of the sea. Swimming down, I plunged into the depths as I looked for Jacob. Visions of his beautiful body mangled upon a rock urged me to move faster. I tried to read his thoughts but all I saw were bubbles around him. My gaze swept around the dark water and I blessed the fact I didn't need to breathe. It gave me time while I searched for Jake; it also allowed clearer vision without obstructing bubbles.

'Edward, where are you?'

I tilted up my head and saw a dark shape bobbing on the surface, high above me. My chest heaved in relief; I swam upwards and surfaced a few yards from him.

Once he saw me, Jake coked his eyebrows at the shore. 'Let's hurry.'

Jake swam with grace, his broad russet shoulders cutting a fine figure against the churning sea. His hair was plastered to his skull; Jacob was sleek, truly a creature fashioned out of water and air.

When we reached the shore, he heaved himself onto a smooth rock and glanced at the cliffs above. Forgetting the danger we were in, I could only stare at the water drops gliding down his smooth torso.

I muttered, "We still have time. I'll distract them so you can make your escape."

He shook his head and grabbed my arm. "Are you nuts? They'll tear you to pieces."

"It doesn't matter." I stared at him, wanting to preserve the vision of the wolf in my mind for eternity. "I don't care as long as you're safe. Why can't they leave us alone?"

"You know the reasons, Edward." Jake clutched my arm and whispered, "Bella and her damned shield! She can't forget the past."

I grimaced when I remembered the slow descent into hell our marriage became after Bella lost the child. She blamed me, and her newborn strength swiftly corrupted her. Her shielding power turned hideous and became the means she used to mold people's minds. Perhaps it had been there all along and that was the reason both Jacob and I fell hard for her.

At any rate, Bella influenced the minds of my family and the pack, turning them against us. After our divorce was finalized, I sought refuge in Jacob. Bella could not countenance that.

"We'll make it together or die together," Jake said.

Knowing I couldn't change the damned wolf's mind and loving him for it, I climbed a boulder and motioned to my back. "Hop in! It's faster this way."

Jacob's warmth soothed me as I climbed, easily grabbing purchase in the slippery rocks. I whispered, "I made plans, there's a rented car two miles from here."

"Good. Told you they…"

"…wouldn't listen because they were brainwashed. You were right, wolf. I should've listened to you."
